At Holiday Inn York City Centre , you are conveniently located within the city walls and only minutes away from the heart of everything our historic city of York has to offer. A visit to the famous Jorvik Viking Centre is a must, a popular attraction for adults and kids alike, or take a walk down The Shambles , voted Britain’s Most Picturesque Street. We are also just minutes away from the famous Betty's Tea Room, pop in for an afternoon tea or just grab one of their famous Fat Rascals
. Our hotel has 100 modern bedrooms with free Wi-Fi , comfy beds and walk-in showers. We also offer 3 meeting rooms with free Wi-Fi, accommodating up to 60 guests, and can tailor the layout to best suit your needs.
Start your day with a hot buffet breakfast in our restaurant which is also open for dinner and kid's eat free. In the hotel bar, you can enjoy a snack or unwind with friends or family over a drink. Feel like staying in? Enjoy a meal from the room service menu.

Staff friendly & service quick but don’t stay if you need a good nights sleep as beds are too uncomfortable. Location perfect if you want to walk to local restaurants. Food very basic but you get what you pay for as was a cheap 1 night break for 2.

Room was not vacuumed, bed seem like someone took a nap, shower curtain was dirty, room had a bad odor. We were there for church event. Too many guest in lobby, not able to bring problem to staff attention

Worst Stay Since Becoming a Rewards Member

My family and I recently visited St. Louis for a weekend to enjoy some of the kid-friendly attractions like the Zoo, Science Center, and City Museum. We chose this hotel for two reasons: the downtown location, and the advertised restaurant where “kids eat free.” Terrible decision. The restaurant was never open for any meal despite staff saying it would be on our arrival. No one ever offered any explanation for why it was closed either. And with no breakfasts in the morning, there was also no coffee in the lobby. On our second morning, I went down to the front desk to ask for in-room coffee supplies; they couldn’t find any creamer and only a single sugar packet. Only one of the three elevators was working during our stay. The hallways/carpet looked like they hadn’t seen a vacuum in awhile; in fact, I didn’t see a vacuum until the morning we left. Our room seemed okay at first glance, but the more you looked, the worse it got. Stains on the comforters. Parts of the AC unit exposed. The wallpaper in the bathroom peeling away. The floor of the tub peeling up. The shower faucet never stopped running no matter how much I adjusted the handle. The restaurant situation meant that we had to find food somewhere in the city instead of being able to jump into our adventures and ultimately increased the cost of our trip. We’ve been IHG Rewards Members for several years and have used IHG properties in many different places, but this was easily the worst stay we’ve had as far as amenities and upkeep. We would’ve stayed somewhere else if they had just reported the closed restaurant on the app/website; instead we wasted TWO rewards nights here. I will say that staff was genuinely nice and tried to be helpful even if there wasn’t much they could do. And the hotel offered a free parking spot along the street (which is incredibly rare in downtown STL). But I’m not sure that’s enough to stay here over another location in the city.

I walk into the lobby, no one’s at the desk. I wait. Notice a woman laying on a couch, talking on her phone. She gets up, walks to the desk. Says “name” and I hand her my cc and id. She’s still on the phone, continuing her conversation. She hands me my card back along with a room card. She did acknowledge my diamond elite status, which I felt was weird after the most bizarre check in I’ve ever experienced. Room felt very filthy. Tile floor felt greasy and the carpet hadn’t been vacuumed. One garbage can for the whole room, which was annoying. Linens were so bad that I considered buying my own at a local store. Breakfast was typical to the brand. I definitely won’t be back and will be calling corporate.

No follow through on the thermostat issue that we told them about when we checked into our room. They put us in a different room when we returned 4 hours later.

I regret my decision to stay with them

To summarize:
• The most unfriendly hospitality staff we have encountered in over 20 years of traveling. Not a single hello, welcome, or thank you for choosing them. Staff members would pass by without acknowledging guests and only spoke when spoken to. There was no warmth or professionalism—just indifference.
• Extremely outdated and rundown hotel. We booked two separate rooms, and the moment we walked in, we were hit with the overwhelming stench of dirty, old carpet. The smell was unbearable—like a mix of wet dog and something worse. Unfortunately, we carried that odor with us, forcing us to wash all our clothes and disinfect our luggage and bags after leaving. Black mold was visible around the balcony doors, ceilings, and walls. A large gap under the balcony door likely contributed to the humidity issues. There was also an odd piece of furniture serving as a “closet,” but the moldy stench that poured out when we opened it made it unusable. The drawers reeked of mold as well, contaminating anything placed inside. Both my husband and I developed severe respiratory issues after our stay, with mine becoming so bad it affected my left ear. The carpet smell intensified unless we kept the AC at 66°F—absolutely unacceptable.
• Most disturbing incident: A balcony door malfunction left me locked outside for over 10 minutes. A hotel employee saw and heard my repeated pleas for help in both Spanish and English—yet chose to ignore me. He had just finished his shift, carrying a lunchbox over his shoulder, and rather than assisting or notifying someone, he simply walked away. This level of disregard for guest safety is appalling. Had my husband not returned from dropping off pool towels, I don’t know how long I would have been stuck. Even worse, the hotel did nothing about it—the employee’s car remained in the same spot throughout our stay, meaning there were no consequences for his actions.
• I was born and raised in this town and chose this hotel because I once considered it an institution. However, I am so disappointed that I deeply regret my decision. Additionally, I’m an IHG club member, and while the hotel offers exclusive parking for members, locals who come to gamble at the casino take these spots. The hotel does nothing to enforce the signage or verify whether these individuals are actual club members entitled to this benefit. These spaces are more accessible to the hotel’s front entrance, yet paying guests with loyalty status are left without priority. All in all, I will stay somewhere else next time.

A hotel employee saw and heard my repeated pleas for help in both Spanish and English—yet chose to ignore me. He had just finished his shift, carrying a lunchbox over his shoulder, and rather than assisting or notifying someone, he simply walked away. This level of disregard for guest safety is appalling. Had my husband not returned from dropping off pool towels, I don’t know how long I would have been stuck. Even worse, the hotel did nothing about it—the employee’s car remained in the same spot throughout our stay, meaning there were no consequences for his actions.
• I was born and raised in this town and chose this hotel because I once considered it an institution. However, I am so disappointed that I deeply regret my decision. Additionally, I’m an IHG club member, and while the hotel offers exclusive parking for members, locals who come to gamble at the casino take these spots. The hotel does nothing to enforce the signage or verify whether these individuals are actual club members entitled to this benefit. These spaces are more accessible to the hotel’s front entrance, yet paying guests with loyalty status are left without priority. All in all, I will stay somewhere else next time.
