The Holiday Inn Express in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, U.S. is NOT a good representative for the Holiday Inn brand or the IHG hotel corporation.
We reserved a King room for the night of 2/28/25. As part of the reservation, we used the "special request" feature to ask for a room on the top floor away from elevators because we anticipated a very long, exhausting drive (12 hrs) and hoped for a room with the least possible amount of noise.
Upon arrival at the front desk, we were not greeted by the only desk attendant for that night. We stated that we had a reservation and gave our name. The desk attendant then tossed a room key across the desk to us. The room key indicated a first floor room, so we mentioned the top floor room request, and the desk attendant for that night replied, "There is no top floor." (The hotel actually has 3 floors, so the 3rd is the top floor.) She tossed a paper across the desk to us, with no comment or direction. It was a paper requiring an initialization from us, so we completed it and returned it to her. She never said anything else to us, not even the customary, "Enjoy your stay." So, we asked, "Is that it?" She replied, "Yep! Short and sweet."
We are well traveled, open-minded people who have no issue with the way other people present themselves in most settings. However, her clothing, hair and multitude of piercings made it seem as if she should be at home in her own living room, rather than representing a highly regarded hotel brand.
She was, in fact, the least professional desk attendant we have ever encountered in our 30+ years of traveling.
We accepted her odd behavior and check in procedure without complaint and walked toward the room. On the way, we noticed stained carpet and cracks in the walls along the side of room doors. Inside the room, we noticed more cracks and stains, as well as a very dirty smear of something on the sofa/lounger. We completed our customary search for bed bugs and, finding no evidence, prepared to sleep.
Sleep was slow to arrive due to the loud, howling, whistling noise of the wind coming through something somewhere in the room or building. We were only able to sleep because we brought our own fan for white noise.
The following morning, breakfast was the hotel's best feature and the one thing we enjoyed during our stay. IHG might want to inspect this hotel more closely.
We do NOT recommend staying in this hotel. If it had been earlier in the evening, we would have walked out immediately at the rude greeting, and gone to any other hotel in the area rather than stay at this one.

IHG Price Match Guarantee is a HOAX!

The hotel itself was ok. However, I originally was going to book this room through Priceline. It was listed as $124.00 per night. But, I wanted to get my rewards points because it was a 5 night stay. So, I called IHG directly to book my room. I spoke with a lady who booked my room for me and sent me the link to fill out for the price match. I filled out the form, but it was sent back to me saying it was denied because something was not booked correctly. Therefore, I called IHG again. This time I spoke with a male. He said he realized what the issue was and that he could fix it. He cancelled the room the original person booked and rebooked it. Then, HE filled out the price match request form for me. I heard nothing back. I even took a screenshot of the Priceline rate per the recommendation of both IHG employees I spoke with. When I checked into my room, I asked about the rate. The rate they showed averaged out to $165 per night. So, I called IHG again. They told me that there was nothing they could do, that I needed to email the price match team and he sent me the email address. Since that time, I have sent two emails and heard nothing back. When I received my bill after my trip it still showed the $165 rate. So, I called again just now and the supervisor acted like she was looking into it, but hung up on me instead. I will never book and IHG hotel again. Their Price Match Guarantee is a hoax! Supposedly, there is a special "price match team" that you cannot actually talk to and they do not respond to emails.

Noisy road!!!

I didn't expect to be so impacted by the proximity to a road to a hotel but the traffic is persistent throughout the day and night here. It is primarily large trucks like semis and they all use engine brakes that are extremely loud. And if it isn't a semi, it seems to be someone with a very loud vehicle. It seemed like they were in the room with me most of the time and I was on the 3rd Floor on the south side of the building above the main entrance. Bring your ear plugs or be a sound sleeper!

Double check your room choice

With the construction during our last 3 visits the rooms we had reserved were not available when we arrived for check in. They did their best to accommodate but I recommend CALLING (if you can get through) and confirming you’ll get the room you need. We travel with 2 kids and the family suites removed the bunk beds in the separate bedroom, replacing them with a conference table and chairs. They promised to update the app reflecting that. We had to split up the family in separate rooms during our last visit. Breakfast was difficult with little options due to construction on our last 2 visits but that may be remedied now. Clean rooms. Desk staff seems overwhelmed and not friendly. Have never had friendly desk service here unfortunately. We travel 14 hours and pass through here, and its still a good sleeping space.

The Holiday Inn Northwest University Heights hotel offers spacious guest rooms and full suites, microwave and refrigerators in each guest room. Our famous hot breakfast buffet is a favorite, with the sparkling indoor pool, free internet, fitness and business center. With easy access to San Antonio International Airport, Military friendly, we are easy access to JBSA – Camp Bullis and Fort Sam Houston for our military groups and training programs. Our groups love to mingle and have "Ice Breaker" receptions at our Lobby Bar before going out to dinner at great local restaurants.

I checked in and went to my room. Me always inspect the room the bathroom at hair longer than my hair. I took a picture notified the front desk was never cleaned on day two I asked him to please only clean the bathroom and throw out the trash. They cleaned the restrooms never took the trash.

Location ok, service not.

When arrived, I noticed the bed had a few pieces of hair in it and on the toilet seat. But after being on the road for HOURS and enjoying the city, I was too tired to let front desk know. Instead I went to the store and got cleaning products. The bed was comfy. Breakfast was plentiful my 1st day there, even though the juice machine was out of order. My second day, not so much. I went down to breakfast about 8:15, and there was nothing available but pancakes. I sat for a while, thinking the older black lady in the kitchen was about to bring something out. Instead she came out, looked and saw there was nothing out there. Made a face, scraped some eggs up and ate it, then went back in the kitchen. I went to front desk and asked was breakfast over. Front desk said not til 930. So, I went to the kitchen door and asked the older lady if she was bring breakfast out. She said "All I have is eggs and biscuits." Mind you, it was now almost 9am and she was cracking the eggs in the sink. I didn't wait for that. There were others waiting AND a lot of young men were in the hotel (I guess they were in town for a tournament or something). There should have been communication between front desk and the kitchen worker about the amount of guests in the hotel to be prepared with breakfast. There should also be a note pad and pen in the rooms. I had to walk downstairs for a pen. I probably won't be staying at this location again.

Just a regular stay nothing special

The staff are very helpful and welcoming, however it feels like an outdated InterCon. I feel like I am just staying another holiday Inn. Their TV remote is a universal one and was not working. I have to unplug the TV to turn it off.
