Yes, I recommend this property.
We have enjoyed staying in this hotel on many occasions and each time and this latest stay is no exception. We particularly enjoy the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the room (although this time the room 334 smelt musty).
The one downside was the arrangement for breakfast. This has changed somewhat over the years and we feel that the present system does not meet our needs. The food on offer is excellent but all we require for breakfast normally is cereal, toast, coffee and, possibly, a bit of fruit. The only option available is therefore the continental breakfast at a cost of £16.95 per person which is excessive for what we want.
To deny the use of the coffee machine if you choose one of the a la carte items seems mean!
A more flexible system need to be found that offers value for money.

A modern hotel next to York Racecourse with free parking, free Wi-Fi, a relaxing bar and a restaurant. Less than two miles from the city centre, Holiday Inn® York hotel has free parking right next to York Racecourse . It's a five-minute drive to the A64 , offering easy road access to the M1 . You can be at many of the city's attractions, including Clifford's Tower , within a 10-minute drive. Learn about the city's murky history at one of the York Dungeon 's live shows, a seven-minute drive from the hotel. Barley Hall tells the story of Henry VIII's only visit to York, and it also displays the costumes from the TV series The Tudors and The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Outdoor enthusiasts can drive 40 minutes for a bracing walk over the Howardian Hills . The hotel offers seven fully-equipped meeting rooms with flexible layouts , free Wi-Fi and catering options . You can enjoy coffee throughout your meetings, and finish off any research on the lobby's computers . Delegates can take a direct bus from the hotel to York Train Station . Enjoy a hot buffet breakfast, or a pizza or salad for dinner, in the Junction Restaurant 's contemporary dining room. You can also relax over a chilled glass of wine or a coffee in the open-plan bar , or unwind in your room with 24-hour room service . Kids stay and eat free .

Staff were extremely obliging and helpful but it was clear that they were under huge pressure because, particularly for the first night, the hotel was understaffed for the number of guests.
I discovered that there was a rubberised/plastic mattress protector on the bed. As I am allergic to these I requested it to be changed. This was done very quickly but as the protector was being changed I noticed that the mattress was very badly stained - not very welcoming!
Breakfast on the first morning can only be described as mayhem. A coach party had been accommodated over night and we arrived in the restaurant to find that no tables were available with debris on every table. No plates were available nor mugs and the very limited staff did their best but were rushed off their feet, unable to cope with clearing tables and providing the necessary service. This meant that they were the subject of some very vocal complaints. Under the circumstances they did the best they could but the hotel was clearly not prepared to properly serve the number of guests resident and I felt sorry for the staff who were subjected to this mayhem.
Breakfast on the second morning was fine.
